What should a couple prepare before meeting with their planner for the first time

Before meeting with your event planner its great to have a few answers ready to some very important questions.

The following is a great beginners list:

1. Where is the location of your wedding? If you do not have a location in mind what are 3 elements that you need your venue to have (i.e. should it be urban, have water elements, stone/brick, two-story windows, greenery, etc.)

2. How many guests will you be inviting?

3. What is your on day budget? (this will be the most important question) – your planner will help you balance out your budget and which vendors & their quality will be best within your budgetary requirements.

4. What services will you need? Although there are similarities with each wedding, there are definite differences and your planner will be able to highlight your unique attributes to make your day shine.

5. What suppliers will you want to hire? This is great in the way it goes hand in hand with the services you need. We once had a couple needing a DDR machine and that was very important to them. Not every couple will want a DDR machine.

6. What are your special requirements for your wedding venue?

7. Do you have guests with any food or dietary restrictions any allergies?

8. What is your color palette? Start with 2-3 colors and then you can choose a couple others as your accents.

9. What would you like to have as a theme?

10. What is your favorite flower? What flowers are you allergic too?

11. What are your visions of the day?

Some other important questions are:   How do you want to feel on the day of your wedding? How do you want your guests to feel? What are three important moments you do not want to miss on your wedding day?

Planning a wedding can be stressful and at times overwhelming but our Planners, Coordinators and Designers are always here for you and look forward to hearing about your love story! Call us 847-675-3789 or text us at 847-892-6125 <3

6 INCREDIBLE YEARS!

Six years have flown by and it seems like only yesterday Mayor Van Dusen, family, friends and 120+ neighbors came to celebrate the grand opening of Kensington. With all the experiences throughout the years we feel it is essential to take a moment and reflect on the great relationships forged, accolades earned, growing pains and togetherness.

Each of the relationships we have been so lucky to build over the years brings us a sense of warmth and humility that cannot quite be expressed. Working with clients who have become family has been an incredible part of this entire experience. Earning their trust on the most precious, momentous occasions in their lives has not only been heartening but also very gratifying.  With each event, we have been introduced to brilliant people and working with each is awe-inspiring to see how their abilities are sculpted and showcased throughout countless occasions.  We truly love to establish relationships with amazing talents and cannot wait to simply work together on future events and projects. It is wonderful to feed off creativity, passion and excitement in this fantastic industry and we are happy to share it with amazing teams and companies.

Seeing our work featured has become one of the most thrilling aspects this industry has to offer. Walking into Kensington each morning seeing the “wall” lined with print magazine covers, awards, features and thank you cards from happy couple’s and client’s starts each of our days in the best way possible. Having many client’s return or recommending us to their family and friends is an honor that truly makes each of us feel blessed and happy to be working in such a celebration-centric industry.

With growth, there is bound to be challenges but we seem to thrive from them. We are proud of the way each of us has grown and what we have accomplished when we work as a team focusing on open communication and transparency. We have learned to thoroughly listen to each other, attain feedback and construct a strong foundation to build from. Making sure we check in as a team and push each other’s talents makes us better creatives in the industry making our clients happy, feel at ease and allow them to enjoy their events wholeheartedly!

We want to thank each and every one of you who has entered our lives! Thank you to our clients for trusting us with your most precious moments and thank you to our vendor partners who always push the bar further on level of standard, quality of service, and imagination. Up Up and Away….

Up Up and Away was exactly what Stella envisioned her little bundle of joy’s room to look like. It was a new adventure that her husband, Matthew and she would embark on and she visualized the way her little one would one day soar and create his or her own adventure in this world. Stella and Matthew came to Kensington with visions of clouds, balloons and extreme happiness. As first time parents, they wanted to be surprised by the baby’s gender and the hot air balloon theme was perfect for such a lovely occasion.

Touring locations in the Chicago-land area, Stella’s mom, Mrs. T, felt that the Evanston Golf Club was impeccable. The Terrace room with a wall of windows overlooking the lush greens was picturesque and a backdrop that would enhance the Up Up and Away theme. Guests would arrive and at the top of the stairs on their cobble stone lined walk a 5ft tall hot air balloon filled with hundreds of flowers grabbed the attention of guests giving them a glimpse of what was to come. Custom place cards were made with 3D cutouts that were set atop blue pearl paper to emulate the sensation of floating. Cloud clumps were on the ground along with at the escort table for everyone to feel they were about to set off onto an adventure.

Through beautiful glass French doors into the rustic bar guests were enticed with spring cocktails that danced on the tasted buds but all seemed to want to round the corner to see the magic that awaited. At the entrance of the terrace room gasps were heard when each guest took in the room. Hanging clouds from beams, 3ft hot air balloons on each table and a sweet faux cloud wall with faux grass for guests to take photos and simply enjoy.

A cloud cake with animal and hot air balloon cake topper sat in one corner with wisdom cards for guest to fill and take time to decide whether they thought the baby would be a boy or girl. Thumb prints of each guest were put on a board and their names written to later determine who the winner was. Each guest received custom cookies of onesies and hot air balloons that matched the cake to perfection. The colorful linens were all various colors from the gorgeous invitations and livened up the room to dazzle everyone’s eyes.

The day was filled with joy and happiness that the couple were overwhelmed with the generosity shown to them and their unborn child. New memories were created and memories that will be shared explaining the amount of love that rose from each heart and truly showered this blessed family of soon to be three.

Vintage Glamour

The Victorian Era brought with it a romantic love that was the principal necessity for marriage and courtship. It was such an integral part of the “wooing” process, that it became a sort of art form for the upper classes trying to win over the lady of their dreams. With the presence of chaperones, hand written love letters, and dreamy lace, we delve into the modern take of  this lovely era in Vintage Glamour.

Dreaming up Vintage Glamour was a breeze once entering the Dole Mansion. The historic landmark was developed on the vast 1000 acres of land in 1860 which surround Crystal Lake. Featuring the romantic Italianate style craftsmanship throughout the magnificent mansion, one can only dream of all the secrets this beautiful backdrop has acquired over the last 158 years. The upstairs private family rooms which overlook the grounds and the lake, have kept their intricate allure creating the perfect setting for any bride, says Planner Victoria Thanoukos of Kensington Florals & Events. Capturing the essence of the time period while injecting hints of glamour was important throughout the day.

Vintage tributes with touches of old Hollywood were created by Golden Bridal Design that shown through in the gorgeous makeup applique and voluminous styled hair with an antique hair brooch.  A custom Juliet cap cathedral veil by Sew Bridal was over 9ft long and had the most beautiful and delicately hand sown lace detailing both at the crown and the tail.  A gorgeous full lace covered bodice dress from Dame Couture provided the perfect overall fancifully romantic effect illustrating the mood of the day. Elegant custom vintage jewelry was designed and provided by Calla Couture Jewelers taking this glamour vintage look to new heights!

A divine, antiqued blue cake by Amy Beck Cake Designs, was decorated with a simple wrap-around of handcrafted sugar-floral matching the lush urn floral pieces created by Kensington Floral Events to exemplify the old-world ambiance carried throughout the day. Striking flowers placed in the bridal bouquet by Blooming Events fashioned this over the top look perfectly tying in each element beautifully.

When new meets old-fashioned, proper bridesmaid dresses are the seamless touch in adding that perfect pop of color and whimsy. Carrying various shades of blue, each bridesmaid made an entrance in her lovely dress by Bridesmaids Social dazzling on lookers and tying in the hues from the lovely floral blue hued stationery custom designed by Emery Ann Designs, the cake and accents of the day.

Gracefully captured by the talented Jillian Plaminek of Truly Sublime Photography, we all had a dreamy time designing Vintage Glamour at the picturesque Dole Mansion.

Dear Boho Bride …. We LOVE You

It takes a unique person to embody the Bohemian flair and carry the exceptional style throughout the elements of their wedding. Many brides don’t know where to start or if they are doing “too much” or “too little” and then end up scraping their idea all together for a look that doesn’t really fit them and doesn’t capture the love the couple has for each other.

Well, we wanted to tell you “STOP”… Stop throwing your dreams away and BEGIN looking and what will work best for your special day! Remember…..it’s in the details and all these details are too yummy not to share!

We simply love this Bohemian Style with an Eastern Flair and we are thrilled to share it with all of you 🙂

This look was created to show every Boho Bride the ways you can incorporate Macramé, lace, minimalistic pieces, the unconventional ideals, your mom’s 1970’s throw pillows, lanterns, and lovely color (subtle and bold) into a gorgeous wedding look that is authentic to you, feels perfect and dazzles your guests!

First: Location Location Location!!!

Your venue should fit you. It should fit the vibe and ambiance of the wedding day that you would like to achieve. Too many of our couples have booked a hall simply because it was close by or because they were offered a special deal and then end up regretting it and feeling as if they are stuffing a “square peg” idea into a “round hole” setting.

Galleria Marchetti gave use the perfect backdrop! Stone on ¾ of the walls and floors, exposed brick as a central focal point with real ivy growing throughout, and multiple Moroccan/Tuscany inspired tiled mosaics scattered in the glassed encased room as well as the outdoor adjacent terrace.

BINGO! This was brilliant! And our perfect Boho Venue!

Once the ambiance is picked it’s down to the best colors to really create the feel, warmth, and energy of the day. We always build from our primary bold colors and layer in our more subtle complimentary colors. This will also help with what colors you would like to carry throughout each component of your overall look (i.e. bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen suits/tuxedos, linens, paper goods, cake, etc.) So many ways to bring in your favorite colors!

Our Primary Colors:

Our Secondary Colors:

Properly working with your colors calls for a bit of planning and we say start with your tablescape and vision board. Cut out pictures with colors of pieces that you love! A teal/aloe blue cake, teal bridesmaid dresses, gold accent pieces, pale peachy flowers, etc. That way you can start to play around with the look and feel over everything. Then start narrowing down what speaks to you the most. What do you get most excited about when you see it and work from there?

For this specific look, a more toned down, warm color palette allowed the beautiful boho/eastern inspired pieces to play center stage.

We began where we always begin …..Linen! Start from the bottom and work your way up. The warm colors of the metropolitan table linen from Windy City Linen

The metropolitan table linen from Windy City Linens

Hints of Gold Sown through each of the table linens

Antique Gold, Pale Peach and Sage Napkins were used to pop color over the ornate chargers.

Simple pops of color add warmth and energy to this gorgeous design. Your love is simply showcased in all the details!

The cake is something that was extremely important as it was not only a focal point to the entire day but it also brought in the shades of teal and aloe blue with a beautiful macramé accent which encompassed the boho vibe. So scrumptious and dreamy to look at! Amy Beck hit it out of the park with this stunning design!

Gorgeous hues of teal and aloe blue spread throughout the cake and complimented by eggplant, green, and creamy whites. Simply beautiful artistry!

What is a boho style in a bridal dress? This questions is difficult as every boho bride has her own way of showcasing her style and take on the term. But we would say, lite, airy, whimsical, lacey, a little mermaid tail but not a 10ft train. Something that is either loose or clings a bit to the body to show off a bit of a curve. It’s up to you on how “Boho” you plan on making your day.

Once we saw this at Eva’s International Bridal …..we simply couldn’t get our eyes off this semi-mermaid, lace detailed, curve hugging dress!

Pave, minimilastic floral design captures the whimsical nature of this couple. Taking antique photo frames and building a pave design within them using vintage roses (crème de la crème, faith, quick sand, cool water, sweet Eskimo, lemonade, amnesia, and earl grey) and hints of lisantus and fruits made this design and understated yet sweet look that enraptures guests at each table. Able to easily converse while admiring the details is appreciated and admired by all who attend. A custom macrame, hooped bridal bouquet perfectly tied in the cake and entire theme in its simplistic design.

Custom jeweled menu cards were topped with ivory macaroons with a simple brush of dusted gold.  Gilded elephants, with place name settings, were provided at each setting as they are said to bring luck, strength, and stability by many Eastern cultures.

Traditional jewelry and accessory pieces were used in non-traditional fashion to accentuate our Eastern Flair. Soft pink makeup was used to represent Jaipur and simplified to epitomize the entire look of the day. Modest curls and half fishtail that trailed down, emulated the buttons on the back of the dress, was topped with a marque double diamond.

A blue tuxedo suit was perfect to tie in all blue accents for the day, from vintage jewelry to the cake!

Festival of Lights – Celebrating Hanukkah

Celebrating the miracle of the Festival of Lights is a great time to reconnect with family and remember the history of the re-dedication of the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. Creating the perfect Tablescape for your family to enjoy can at times be daunting as there are so many fantastic options. Here we have taken a more modern glittery approach on this wonderful holiday and hope you enjoy!

Creating the table from the base up, we started with the beautiful glittering linen ASTRO by BBJ Linen and coupled it with both Peacock Blue Faille and Graphite Velvet napkins. Settings were paired with handsome blue antique goblets, silver Murano stemware, onyx flatware and glass bead chargers by Hall’s Rental topped with white orchids from Kensington. Fashioning our own version of a Menorah with crystal candleholders, glass cylinders and floating candles illuminates a more modern look to this wonderful tradition.

As stories of the Maccabees are shared and traditional dishes of latkes, loukoumades and sufganiyot are passed to each guest, enjoy this dazzling Tablescape that radiates all the splendor that this holiday season has to offer!

A Bold Thanksgiving Tablescape

Your Thanksgiving table should embody an openhearted and warm feeling that entices all of your guests to want to stay and continue to give thanks and create beautiful memories with one another. As we always say when planning a gorgeous Tablescape “Remember to begin from the table linens and work your way up through your charmingly fun and uniquely bold details & designs!”

When we saw the BERRY EDEN table linens at BBJ Linen, we knew it was an absolute must have for our boldly created holiday table! Pairing the linen with two types of napkins (yes two, we make the rules at our dining table) we matched the MULBERRY LAMOUR and WINE VELVET to enhance this daring Tablescape flawlessly.

Paper goods specially created with fall in mind have beautiful burgundy and blush tones with a crimson cranberry velvet ribbon. HOT TREND: Velvet! Emery Ann Design is spot on with style, color and overall feel for this beautiful stationery suite! Fit for any beautiful fall festivity!

These lovely ceramic pumpkin soup bowls from Pier 1 are a impeccable topper to this attractive setting for each guest to enjoy. Just imagine having spicy pumpkin soup and relishing in great conversation with family and friends!

It’s in the details and the trend of continued velvet in our napkins and the thankful tags for each guest, do not go unmissed! Comfy pillows along the bench seating give pops of purple hues while guests relax and snuggle up to this handsomely decorated table. Subtle lush touches from the Hall’s Rental Murano Glass collection elevate this setting to luxury status. Paired with rose gold flatware to complete this over the top fall floral setting!

Understated floral pieces with seasonal pumpkins tie in the entire theme of this fall floral fantasy for any giving table. Accents of lanterns from around the house come in and add an extra depth to this stunning scene.

Using wooden chargers and French country chairs are a seamless way to tie in the outdoor components and hoist the design element of the Tablescape!

Chicago Sweet Connections out did themselves with this ombre burgundy and blush cake filled with pumpkin spice and cream cheese and it will delight any guest’s palate topped with your choice of liquor on these fabulous grateful coasters!
